この曲はスティーブン･フォスター（Stephen Collins Foster, 1826-64）の１８５４年の作品。

世界大恐慌の時にも盛んに歌われたそうなので、また復活するかもしれませんね。

「アメリカ音楽の父」と称されるフォスターも父親がアイルランド人。
フォスターの原点には、幼い頃から聴いていたアイルランドやスコットランドの民謡がありました。

アイルランドの歌姫・メアリー・ブラックなどがこの曲を歌っているのもこうした背景からではないかと。

日本人が聴いてもなぜか懐かしいと感じるのは、
アイルランド民謡やスコットランド民謡、それにフォスターの楽曲が、
日本の唱歌に絶大な影響を与えていたからです。

奄美の元ちとせさんがSiuil A Runを歌っていることを紹介しましたが、
こちらの曲は沖縄の我如古より子さんが吉川忠英さんと一緒に「ハード・タイムズ・カム・アゲイン・ノー・モア」としてアルバム『唄遊び』に収録されています。
この『唄遊び』の「ダニー・ボーイ～我が子へ～」も絶品ですよ。
